The church was built in the 14th century. (There was a 12th Cent church here - the stonework in the vestry door is of this period & whilst the village goes back to the 7th Century, there is no mention of a church in the Doomsday Book) There was a major restoration & rebuild in the 15th Century by James Goldwell of the Parish (later Bishop of Norwich & buried in a very splendid tomb there) possibly after a fire - the roof was raised to add clearstory windows & rood screen & flat roofs on N & S aisles. The Victorians re-pewed & restored the church in 1870s by Blomfield whilst restoring nearby Godinton House. Recently, we have started an equally major restoration of re-roofing, replacing the path and access into the church, repairing the tower & re-ordering the interior for the 21st Century to include toilets, kitchen & disabled access.
